He received his PhD from the University of Pennsylvania in 1975 and the degree of Doctor of Engineering from the University of Tokyo in 1977. Previously he has held the position of Associate Professor at the Institute of Socio-Economic Planning, University of Tsukuba. He is currently Director of the Center for Spatial Information Science and Professor of the Department of Urban Engineering, University of Tokyo.

Barry Boots
He received a PhD from Rutgers University in 1972 and
a DSc from the University of Bristol in 1995. He has lectured previously
at Columbia University and is currently Professor of Geography and Environmental
Studies at Wilfrid Laurier University. He is Co-Editor of the Canadian
Geographer and Chair of the International Geographical Union Commission
of Modelling Geographical Systems.
